From the Publisher – This is it! The band has reached the end of their tour. Are they ready to play the show Veronica booked for them way back in THE ARCHIES #1? Have they learned enough to open up for JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS? The hard rockin’ conclusion to the beloved rock ‘n’ roll comic is here! FINAL ISSUE.

Our We Talk Comics WeView – The Archies #7 is a really good comic that made me sad. The reason it made me sad is because I hadn’t read the previous six issues before reading this one. The problem isn’t that I couldn’t pick up on the story or felt I was missing something vital… It’s that the story is so well crafted and the characters so well-rounded, that I’m sad I missed reading everything that brought us to the events in issue #7. I am happy though, that the trade collection of the series comes out at the end of May so I can easily go back and read all of this series.

I really had no idea what I was expecting when I picked up this book. I think a lot of that comes from the different variations on Archie right now. Part of me was expecting it to read like the original Archies stories, and while there are certainly some throwback moments, it wasn’t like that. Instead, it’s much closer to the current updated Archie. And though I’ll admit I’m not that familiar with the band “Speedy Ortiz”, it doesn’t mean an older reader like me can’t enjoy the ride.

Alex Segura and Matthew Rosenberg handle the writing chores. They do a wonderful job of taking the characters that we know and maintaining the personalities we expect while still giving them fresh, updated voices. The story is excellent because it doesn’t just come off as an excuse to throw bands like Chvrches, Blondie or Tegan & Sara in to a comic. The book definitely has both an emotional core and a sense of fun, making it a throwback Archies story that leaves you wanting more… At least it left me wanting more.

Joe Eisma has a perfect style for a comic like this. His facial expressions are top notch and definitely help add to the characterization. He does a good job combining the original look with the current Archie look. The colors by Matt Herms are bright and really make the art pop. There is no doubt I’m looking at a comic about a rock n roll band. Jack Morelli gets a shout out as well for his work on letters. It can be tough pulling off lyrics and music in comic form, but he does a spectacular job and his work on the splash pages is vibrant and exciting.

The Archies #7 is poignant, funny, sad and wonderful all at the same time. I definitely have expectations of quality when I pick up an Archie title, but this one went above and beyond for me. It helped me see the characters in a new light and care about them once again, but in a different way than I was used to. Besides the cameos and the rock and roll, if you like good characters, then this is a comic you should be looking at. I look forward to seeing what’s next. Highly recommended.

Rating – Very Fine/Near Mint (VF/NM) or 9.0/10
