From the publisher: Britt Reid Jr., the scion of the Daily Sentinel publishing empire, vanishes during a wild party on his friend’s yacht. Meanwhile, crime spikes in the streets of Century City with the mysterious criminal/secret vigilante the Green Hornet absent. It’s only a matter of time before SOMEONE puts two and two together, and it’s up to Kato, former partner of Britt’s father, and his daughter Mulan to protect the city AND the Green Hornet legacy, while finding out what happened to Britt. Amy Chu (Red Sonja, Poison Ivy, KISS) picks up where Kevin Smith left off with an action packed mystery.

Our WTComics WeView – I love when the mantle of one hero gets passed down to the next. There is something very satisfying about seeing a heroes legacy continuing in a new form. The risk with this is if the new generation isn’t particularly interesting… Jason Todd anyone?

With this series we see the introduction of a new Green Hornet, and currently the jury is still out. Writer Amy Chu has decided (wisely or not) to take the dangerous route in taking time to explore what the legacy of the Green Hornet is prior to bestowing it on a new character. While I’m sure that Kato’s granddaughter is going to fill the role, it’s the journey to become the titular hero that is being chronicled here.

The narration in the first panel reads “Who, or should I say what, is the Green Hornet?”. From there we’re taken on a tour of a city missing its hero. Atmosphere abounds as we contemplate if the meaning of the Green Hornet is greater than one man. At the same time both the allies and the foes of the Green Hornet begin to question what caused his disappearance.

I liked this issue a lot, but there isn’t any singular moment I can point to explaining why. It’s good and I’m pretty sure things are being set up for a satisfying story, but there isn’t a masterful action sequence or witty exchange of dialog that has me “champing at the bit” to get to the next issue. Should it make your pull list? It’s making mine, but I have a very long pull list. I guess it really depends upon how much you care about the legacy of the Green Hornet.

Rating: Very Fine- (VF-) or 7.5/10
